The Difficulties of Being a Fashion Student in Brazil

Updated: Oct 31, 2019

How the fashion student is dealing with the problems that the country is facing

Brazil is having one of the most terrifying moment with politics and social problems. Homophobia, racism, femicide and an increasingly oppressive government are just some of them.

Among the various ways to fight and critique against these problems, fashion is one of the biggest representative and, because of that, nothing better than knowing directly from who feels it on the skin: the fashion designer students.

More than a rising fashion designer, they are the future of our world and they know exactly the weight to carry these responsibilities.

Directly from Brazil, the fashion designer student Gabriela Oliveira, 21, tells that one of the biggest problem to be studying fashion right now in Brazil is the way that you will transmit your message to your consumer: “The fashion industry has been tapering down a lot during last years, and to be known you have to make the difference”.

Studying her third year of Fashion Design, Gabriela believes that fashion is the best way the express opinions about social problems: “I believe that fashion is perfect for us to talk about the problems not only of our country, but also about social problems, because fashion is a place where we can express ourselves and express the problems that are happening around us. That’s why I’m very inspired by Ronaldo Fraga”.

For many Brazilians, Fraga is named as the Brazilian Alexander McQueen, known for his impressive runways full of criticism and sometimes the voice that people don’t have.

Ronaldo addresses many “non-speakable” themes in his collections, such as disasters and politics. He has also been testing a more sustainable fashion in his latest collections, that is another theme that Gabriela mentioned: “I believe that sustainable fashion is a big step for world fashion, since from it we would be able to make and sell clothes in a more conscious and responsible way. And due to the current situation in the world with regard to global warming, pollution, etc., it is of the utmost importance that today's designers care about this situation and therefore seek to implement slow fashion in their jobs and life”.

Because of Amazonia deforestation, animals’ exploration and global warming, Brazil is trying to adhere sustainable choices for a better fashion. The only problem is that it is not a cheap choice, especially for a fast fashion company. And that’s why Gabriela is so into that: “I really think that sustainable fashion is the future of fashion. You can see a lot of these examples in the collections presented at “Creator’s House” (Casa dos Criadores in Portuguese). The Creator’s House is a launching event for new Brazilian fashion designers and its main objective is to create a space that allows these designers a proximity to the Brazilian fashion market.

“My dream is to present my collection there one day. I think it is a huge opportunity, especially because they are always launching new faces and new technologies tells Gabriela, who is working on her thesis at the “Faculdade Belas Artes”, one of the strongest college in fashion in Brazil. Her collection is called “Brasilidades” and aims to disseminate the beauties of Brazil. “I have been studying all year long the themes inspired by the history of Brazil in several collections and my idea is to spread the fauna and flora of our country. Of course, as sustainable as I can”.

Gabriela is still in the information gathering and viability phase of the collection but believes that everything will works well.

“I still have one year more to prepare everything, but I will do my best to represent my Brazil through it”.
